Whaikaha – Ministry of Disabled People guidelines
The Whaikaha – Ministry of Disabled People (formerly Ministry of Health) manual provides guidelines for accessing the spectacle subsidy service. It includes clinical guidelines that are intended to show the typical range of prescribing spectacles for most children.

Making claims
Use the Enable Spectacle App to make these claims:
- Spectacle subsidy towards the cost of eye examinations, frames, lenses, eye patches and repairs
- Extra payment for adult size frames (rationale required)
- High level subsidy for children with more complex vision needs
- Claims under genuine and exceptional circumstances.
If you make claims on behalf of an optometrist or opthalmologist you will need to an 'on-behalf user' account.

Cancellations
You cannot cancel an application because once the application is processed the subsidy amount is allocated automatically. However, you can request a credit.
