Palliative Care Equipment Service Benefits CDHB Residents

15 November 2013

Taking care of family at the end of their life is essential and Enable New Zealand is part of this process for palliative care patients in the Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) region.

Since 2011 Enable New Zealand has managed the Palliative Care equipment service on behalf of the CDHB. Enable New Zealand has delivered and picked up thousands of equipment items that has assisted families.

Equipment ranges from basic items like shower stools to medical beds and mobility assistance products like wheelchairs. From July 2012 to June 2013 around 9000 items were delivered and picked-up.

Once an application is made to Enable New Zealand by an approved referrer, the items are picked, delivered and set-up in the client’s home within 24 hours. The equipment is then picked up when no longer required. Deliveries and pick-ups are made anywhere from Kaikoura to Ashburton.

Kerry Hammington, Service Unit Manager, Warehousing & Distribution at Enable New Zealand says: “We are pleased to offer people assistance to provide comfort and safety in their own homes that benefits both the client and their families.”

To access this service, a referral is needed from Palliative Care clinicians in the CHDB, Nurse Maude Palliative Care services, or the Older Persons Health Specialist Service.
