Modification types

People with impairments in their limbs may get their vehicles modified to help them be independent and use a vehicle Every vehicle modification is unique because each disabled person has different needs. There is no standard modification. However, some common modifications include hand controls, left-foot accelerators, wheelchair stowage equipment, handbrake devices, hoists, and ramps. Most modifications are for people who need to drive the vehicle or travel as a passenger.

To be eligible for a modification, you must be able to drive safely and have an assessment carried out.

Please note that not many of these modifications are done each year, there are often other ways to support an injured or disabled person into accessible transport.

If you’re not eligible for vehicle modifications or if you’d like to learn about other ways to transport yourself to the hospital or important appointments, take a look at the transport section on Firstport.
