DSS funding for vehicles
If you were born as a disabled person or have acquired accessibility needs over time, you may be eligible for vehicle modification support.
If you are a New Zealand resident with a long-term disability that isn't covered by ACC, you may be eligible for funding assistance through Disability Support Services.
This funding can help with vehicle modifications and, in some cases, even the purchase of a vehicle that will be modified to meet your needs. Your financial situation and specific circumstances will be considered when determining eligibility.
Types of Vehicle Modifications
An occupational therapist can help you find the best way to get around, whether you're driving a modified vehicle or traveling as a passenger. For drivers, your disability needs and driving ability will be assessed.
Recommendations may include hand controls, seating adjustments, ramps, hoists, and safe ways to transport your wheelchair. For young passengers, safety needs will be assessed, which may include seating, safety restraints, ramps, hoists, and wheelchair transport solutions.
Funding for Vehicle Modifications
To get funding for vehicle modifications, you'll need to talk to an occupational therapist (assessor).
They will:
Assess your needs.
Identify necessary modifications to support you in work, study, or caregiving.
Determine your eligibility for funding assistance from Disability Support Services.
Advise you on other funding sources or options for purchasing or changing a vehicle yourself.
Other options, such as public transport, mobility taxis, and grants from organizations like the NZ Lottery Grants Board, can also be considered. Your occupational therapist will help you explore these options and you can view more at the Firstport link on the side.
Service Providers
Enable New Zealand is the service provider for New Zealand south of the Bombay Hills. Accessable is the service provider for Auckland and Northland. Both ourselves and Accessable handle the applications from occupational therapists after they have conducted an assessment on you and made a recommendation.
On behalf of DSS, we ensure that the assessor has considered all support, transport, and equipment options available. If your application is approved, vehicle modifications or the purchase of a suitable vehicle can begin as soon as funding is available. The timing will depend on the urgency of your need.
The Disability Support Services website has more information about vehicle modifications and how to apply.
