What is the Experience Advisory Group (XAG)?

The Experience Advisory Group (XAG) is a group set up by Enable New Zealand’s Executive Leadership Team. It gives advice and insights from the perspective of disabled people and their whānau. The group helps make our services more accessible, inclusive, and effective.


What does the XAG do?

The group:

  • Tests ideas and gives feedback

  • Ensures accessibility and inclusion are part of everything we do

Members share advice based on their lived experience of disability.


Who can join the XAG?

Anyone with lived experience of disability can apply. This includes people who are disabled or those who support a disabled family member. Members are independent advisors, not part of Enable New Zealand’s governance.


How are members appointed?

Members are appointed by a panel led by Enable NZ Chief Experience & Engagement Officer. We will consider the variety of experiences and perspectives a person has, and how closely they have been experienced these. To apply, you need to submit an expression of interest using this form.


How often does the XAG meet?

The group meets every three months. Meetings usually last about four hours. Extra meetings may be scheduled if needed.


What is expected of members?

Members are expected to:

  • Attend meetings

  • Take part in discussions

  • Share honest feedback and challenge ideas

  • Act with integrity and keep information confidential

Members also sign a service agreement with Enable New Zealand.


Do members get paid?

Yes. Members are paid $840 + GST per meeting. The Chair is paid $1,000 + GST per meeting. We also cover travel costs and other reasonable expenses.


What does the Chair do?

The Chair:

  • Leads meetings

  • Acts as a link between the XAG and Enable NZ

  • Helps the group stay focused on its purpose


How does the XAG influence Enable NZ?

The group gives advice and recommendations to Enable NZ leaders, which might include the Executive Leadership Team or the Board.


Is the XAG a governance or policy group?

No. The XAG is a critical advisory group. It does not make policy or governance decisions.


How is confidentiality handled?

Members are expected to act with integrity and respect the confidentiality of information and data provided to them.


How long will the XAG exist?

The group will continue as long as Enable New Zealand needs it. The Terms of Reference are reviewed every year. Membership is for two years.


Are meetings online or in person?

Meetings will be at our Palmerston North office. You can also attend online.
