Beyond economic repair (BER) DSS equipment
Equipment is considered Beyond Economic Repair (BER) when it is damaged or worn to a point where repairing it is no longer cost-effective.
The information below outlines what documentation is required, how replacement requests are processed, and what to consider when alternative solutions may be needed, to help ensure requests can be assessed as quickly as possible.
Required Documentation
The assessor must complete the Replacement Equipment Form (ENAE208) and upload it together with the BER form. The request must include:
Client details
Repair service details
Existing equipment details (type, supplier, description, asset number)
Details of any loan equipment provided
New equipment required:
Type, supplier, and description
DSS list equipment number
Whether the exact item is essential
Assessor details
Delivery address
Download the DSS Replacement Equipment form.
Alternative Solutions
If a like-for-like replacement is not appropriate, a reassessment may be required, particularly where:
Items are Band 2–3, or
Accessories cost over $1,000
A new assessment may also be required if the person’s needs or circumstances have changed, to confirm:
Ongoing DSS eligibility
Ongoing suitability of equipment
Requests for Advice
If the alternative solution is non-band list and over $5,000, a Request for Advice is mandatory.
The BER form and supplier quote must be attached.
If you’re unsure whether a replacement, reassessment, or alternative solution is appropriate, or if you need any further advice, please don’t hesitate to get in touch, we’re happy to help.
