Palliative Care Equipment Service provides support when its needed most

From our warehouse in Christchurch, a very special service operates, one which provides much needed practical support to people when they need it most.

Our warehouse technicians take great pride in delivering Enable New Zealand’s Palliative Care Equipment Service on behalf of Canterbury District Health Board, supplying equipment to people with a terminal illness so they can be with their loved ones in their home environment.

“Rather than being in a sterile hospital environment, we provide and install equipment that allows them to remain in their homes, it’s a much more personalised service,” says Warehouse Team Leader, Brett Sewell.

The team receives requests from assessors in the community for a range of equipment, such as shower stools, wheelchairs, walking frames, beds and mattresses. The team then schedule deliveries and take the items out in their van to deliver to people within the Canterbury District Health Board area.

“We greet the person and their families; we quite often see family members during two or three visits as sometimes a person may not want a large amount of equipment delivered in one go, so we do tend to build up a bit of a relationship with the families and carers,” adds Brett.

The service has been running for the last seven years and has provided more than 30,000 items of equipment to people and their families. It is a full-hire service, where the team supply, deliver, set up and collect the equipment when it is no longer needed.

The team are proud of the work they do, and the difference they make to peoples’ lives at a difficult time.
